CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - Earning a Big South Championship was an important achievement for those fans on the Grand Strand and in the Pee Dee. But after the interviews and the celebrations ended in Conway, the waiting began for the Chanticleer basketball team.
Yet now that the bracket is out, anticipation is building, and CCU is making a mark on the national stage.
Some of it is for talent - the team is 11th in the country in rebounding. But the unique nickname that has been on display throughout the country is also garnering attention, leaving many national media members to ask what Chanticleer even is (it's a rooster).
But the Chants are in Raleigh now to try and make history. 16 seeds are winless all-time in the NCAA Tournament with an 0-116 mark, but some - including panelists at ESPN and writers at Forbes - are saying this could be the year it happens, and coastal could be the team to do it.
And thanks to playing in one of the final games in the second round, Coastal technically will have already made it far in the big dance.
"When we play, there will only be 33 teams left, so we're in the top 33 at least," joked head coach Cliff Ellis.
