Man arrested and charged for shooting in Bennettsville

MARLBORO COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A man was taken into custody in McColl Tuesday evening after a short foot chase; he has been charged in connection with a shooting in Bennettsville earlier in the day.

At about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, there was a shooting on Fletcher Street in Bennettsville, according to Detective Tim Hood with the Bennettsville Police Department. The suspect, later identified as Jovanni Jamal McLain, shot at a victim several times, but the victim was able to hide behind a car and avoid getting hit, Detective Hood said. The suspect fled on foot.

At about 8:30 p.m., McLain was taken into custody at a residence in McColl after a short foot chase with the assistance of McColl Police, said Lt. Larry Turner with the Bennettsville Police Department.

McLain was charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, and malicious injury to property. Bond was set Wednesday morning at $75,000.
