Thousands descend on Myrtle Beach for national cheering competition

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Officials with the City of Myrtle Beach have made it clear - Myrtle Beach will be a premiere sports tourism destination. On Friday, thousands of competitors came to town for the Cheer, Ltd. Nationals at CANAM.

The national cheerleading competition has brought clapping, shouting, high-kicking cheerleaders and their families for 20 years. And they say they have no plans to change that anytime soon.

Once the competitors and their families visit for the competition, the hope is they'll return. That plan seems to be working out.

"We've already tried to plan our next vacation on things to do," says Tonya Storm, mother of one of the competing cheerleaders. Her family lives in Pocono, Pa. "There's so many of them that we're not even going to get a chance to do because of the event. Most of our time was taken up with the event. But there's tons of things to do."
