SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Surfside Beach will be celebrating its 50th anniversary Friday night with a ceremony at the Surfside Beach Library, in addition to several other events later this year.
The ceremony will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the library, located at 410 Surfside Drive, and will be acknowledging the 50 years since the town's incorporation, and the people who have been instrumental in making it the town it is today. The public is invited to attend, and light refreshments will be served.
Surfside had gained the reputation as "The Family Beach" by 1964, and the town was becoming a popular place to visit and retire. The Township increased police protection, and brought several improvements, such as mosquito and sanitation control, street lights, and strategic zoning ordinances. Public parking and walkways to the beach were created, and government offices were constructed off of Highway 17.
