Simultaneous road projects leave drivers with headaches

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - This might be the busiest time for road construction on the Grand Strand in years with multiple projects underway up and down the coast and drivers are feeling the headaches.

"I can't get anywhere I can't take left turns out of anything and I just moved here," said Nicole Jethro who just moved near Restaurant Row on Highway 17 where one of the newest projects is underway.

Crews are working on the final phase of a multi-million dollar project to install a sewer force main replacement underneath the road.

Meanwhile, the Kings Highway beautification project continues to work its way south towards 3rd Avenue South. Several business owners in the area said business has dropped off since the project got underway.

"The challenges so far for my customers has been being able to get in and out of the parking lot safely," said Jim Lauver who recently opened a new embroidery shop on Kings Highway.

"I'm hoping they can get through this quickly and get done and get out of here so that traffic flows and we don't have any problems,"added Lauver.

Both the Kings Highway and Restaurant Row projects are scheduled to be completed by the start of the busy summer season.
