CCU beats VMI to advance to Big South Championship game

CONWAY, SC (WMBF) – Coastal Carolina University's men's basketball team beat Virginia Military Institute 66-62 Saturday, and will be advancing to the Big South Championship game.

The Chants will face the Winthrop Eagles Sunday at 12 p.m. at the HTC Center in Conway.

CCU pulled out the victory against VMI and will be heading to the conference title game for the first time since 2011.

The Chanticleers were up 34-33 at the half, and freshman Elijah Wilson helped keep Coastal ahead in the second half with eight quick points with 11:50 left. CCU jumped out with two minutes left, putting them four points ahead of VMI.

Josh Cameron led the team in points with 17, and three rebounds, followed by junior Warren Gillis with 14 points and four rebounds. 

The Chants won in double-overtime Friday night against Charleston Southern University 73-68 to advance to the semifinals.
