Posted: Updated:
LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

A Gilbert Marine Corps veteran who was severely wounded in a grenade attack in Afghanistan will be awarded the military's highest combat honor.

Kyle Carpenter, a 24-year-old medically retired corporal, will receive the Congressional Medal of Honor.

He will become the third Marine to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Carpenter lost his right eye and most of his teeth in that 2010 grenade attack.

His jaw was shattered and his arm was broken in dozens of places.

The Military Times reports the Marine Corps is finalizing plans with the White House for a ceremony in Washington.
