CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - The Coastal Carolina women's team didn't just make some history in Tuesday night's win against Charleston Southern. The Chants stormed into the program and conference record books in several ways in a 35-point first round victory. And for them, it was a long time coming.
"This game is what we've been talking since June for some, July for others and August for some, said Alexx Puckett, who had a career-high 28 points and 13 rebounds. "Everyone that helped us get to here, coaches, staff, players. They just motivated us to come out and play our best."
Even that could be an understatement. No one on the current roster had won a conference tournament game before - and no one in Big South Tournament history had scored as many points as CCU did after putting up 106.
Angelica Henry had a few own personal bests. She scored the 1,000th point of her career, and also recorded the first triple-double in tournament and program history after going for 30 points, ten rebounds and ten assists.
Coastal's 63.3 shooting percentage is also tops for the tournament, and a large part of that success was because of three players had 26 or more points in the game - also a postseason first (Henry with 30, Puckett with 28 and A.J. Jordan recorded 26).
"One of the coaches actually cursed me out and said 'push the ball like you know how to do', and I said 'yes ma'am'', explained Henry. "I got two points and we got to rolling."
But the turnaround is quick - next game tips Thursday at eight o'clock against Winthrop, with a trip to the semifinals on the line. The Chants lost to Winthrop in both regular season matchups this year.
