MARION COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A 36-year-old mother and her 4-year-old daughter died in a house fire in Marion County early Wednesday morning, the county coroner confirmed.
Marion County Coroner Jerry Richardson identified the victims as 36-year-old Franchesca K. Williams and 4-year-old Catlyn Ellison.
Richardson confirmed the fire occurred on Bobby Mace Road at about 3 a.m. in the Gresham area of Marion County. The remains are being sent to the Medical University of South Carolina for an autopsy, Richardson said.
Neighbor Beth Edwards said she feared the worst when she heard the sirens early this morning because not very many people live in the area but they all know each other.
"All I could think about is it has to be someone in our neighborhood because the Britts-Neck Fire Department just goes down the road a little bit," said Edwards.
Edwards said Williams had finished nursing school then started working at a nearby nursing home when they met. But Edwards said Williams left her job to take care of her mother.
"Her mother had cancer not long after she came to work and she had to leave because she was having to be out so much with her mother," added Edwards.
Multiple agencies were on scene investigating today including SLED. Coroner Richardson said it is not uncommon to bring state investigators in to assist after a fire like today's where a young child is among the victims.
