Ash Wednesday services in Grand Strand, Pee Dee

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – It's Ash Wednesday, the day Lenten Season officially begins.

The pre-Lenten holiday Mardi Gras comes with its own traditions, including King Cake, pancakes, parades and dancing.

Ash Wednesday, observed this year on March 5, begins the season of Lent where many Christians fast and focus on the reason for the Easter season.

By examining over 21,000 tweets, Christianitytoday.com reports some of the top sacrifices this year include chocolate, alcohol, social media, swearing, sweets, soda and coffee.

A number of Twitter users also mentioned they would like to hit the pause button on their Netflix and Flappy Bird addictions.
