MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Some traffic changes are coming to Myrtle Beach and will affect drivers' commute over the next couple of days.
At the Lake Arrowhead Road and Highway 17 intersection, traffic is already suffering due to construction. Soon there will be even more road work in this area.
Starting Tuesday night, drivers will not be able to cross the intersection as crews will be digging across to install a sewer force main. This means drivers will not be able to turn left from Lake Arrowhead Road onto Highway 17 going South. For drivers on Lake Arrowhead, if you want to go South on 17, you will have to turn right at the light and then eventually turn back around to go South.
With the fewer lanes and the lower speed limit, this could cause some traffic issues. With all the major sewer work happening at the intersection, City of Myrtle Beach spokesman Mark Kruea says it's tough to limit the effects on drivers.
"The contractor is trying to do most of the work at night," explained Kruea. "However, when they have a big road crossing like this, they'll do it literally around the clock. They'll do it 24-hours a day."
While you may have to deal with traffic tie-ups in this area 24 hours a day due to construction, luckily the major work happening at the intersection will only be a few days. Kruea says the work is expected to start tonight and should wrap up Thursday morning.
