HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – On March 4, from 9 to 11 p.m., the Eastern Air Defense sector in South Carolina and Georgia, will conduct an air defense exercise in military airspace.
This exercise has been carefully planned and coordinated with the Federal Aviation Administration; and it will evaluate elements of South Carolina Air National Guard's 169th Fighter Wing.
Three small Civil Air Patrol Cessna Aircraft will also participate and serve as simulated targets for this exercise. If the weather forces a cancellation on Tuesday, then the exercise will take place at the same time on Wednesday, March 5.
EADS and its counterpart, the Western Air Defense Sector at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state, are part of the Continental North American Aerospace Defense Command Region (CONR) and are responsible for the air defense of the continental United States. The Sectors conduct these types of exercises on a routine basis as part of North American Aerospace Defense Command's Operation Noble Eagle, which was initiated after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
