Shem Creek business closed after 65 years, others fear similar fate

Posted: Updated:
The sign outside Wando Shrimp used to read, "Closed for Today."

Sunday morning, that sign was covered by one that read simply, "Closed."

The Mt. Pleasant seafood business closed for good after a 65-year run.  Wando Shrimp is one of several closings on Shem Creek in recent months.

Rocky Magwood, a 4th generation shrimp captain, owns Magwood Seafood, which stands just footsteps away from Wando Shrimp.  Magwood said of the closing, "It might be the start of the end."

"It's very scary to see people you've known your whole life, now they don't have a job," he said.

Late last year, one of Magwood's shrimp boats was declared a loss after it sank overnight.  He says he's been able to stay afloat by selling oysters, and is casting nets for crabs.

"There used to be anywhere between 60 to 80 boats in this creek," Magwood said.  "There's only ten left."

Grace Edwards, founder of Shem Creek Fisheries, a non-profit group working to help promote some of the businesses on Shem Creek is scheduled to go before the Mt. Pleasant financial committee Monday.

The organization is seeking funding to help owners with boat repairs, among other needs.
Edwards spoke of a time would all the area's restaurants would buy local seafood.  Now she says that number has dramatically declined.

As for Rocky Magwood and Magwood Seafood, he's left wondering what's next.

"We're hoping to have a good season and everything will turn around, but if things don't change around, I don't know how much longer we're going to have."
