McLeod unveils new cancer patient center

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) The highest accredited cancer treatment center in our area unveiled its new facility at McLeod Regional Hospital on Wednesday.

"What we want to do is be able to offer those services here so that the patients don't have to leave the Pee Dee Region," Judy Bibbo with McLeod Regional Hospital.

The new cancer facility at McLeod is designed around suggestions and input from previous cancer patients and their families on what they would like to see in a cancer treatment center.

"Based on those things we found it was healing and therapeutic and we brought that in to this facility," Bibbo said.

McLeod officials say that patient-driven study is the reason there are waterfalls, certain color schemes and gardens throughout the facility.

"We bring in natural lighting, we focus on our patients' and made it patient focused care," said Bibbo.

One of the biggest improvements this new facility provides to the patients being treated here is having access to various cancer treatment services under one roof.

"Our services before were spread across our campus in several buildings," said Bibbo.

That means, before patients had to go from building to building to see different specialist.

"When the patient comes to the cancer center they can see any of those physicians along with any diagnostic work they need to have done," said Bibbo.

Later this spring, the facility here will open a stereotypic radiology program that will allow for a more focused care for those being treated with cancerous tumors.
