(CNN) - Fast food giants Taco Bell and McDonald's are re-thinking breakfast. They're cooking up new menu options and hours in hopes you'll spend more of your breakfast bucks.

Taco Bell's biggest weapon is the waffle taco. It's a breakfast sandwich inside a waffle with a side of syrup, and Taco Bell thinks it can do some damage.

It's part of Taco Bell's new strategy that includes breakfast burritos and grilled egg tacos.

McDonald's isn't taking it laying down, saying in an interview that its just beginning to reconsider how best to serve up breakfast, in other words, it's thinking of extending breakfast hours.

And McDonald's has already tried to halt a slide in sales by introducing a leaner egg-white McMuffin sandwich.

Breakfast is the highest margin meal in the fast food cycle and the battle will get really intense when Taco Bell rolls out its new menu nationwide in late March.

The new offerings will be rolled out in about 5,500 restaurants throughout the U.S.

So whether it's drive thru lanes, or grab and go at the front counter, things may never be the same for those of us who like to stop for a bite on the way into work.
