Report: Man charged for striking boy with switch

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - An Horry County man is facing cruelty to children charges after a young boy reported he was beaten with a switch, causing so much pain he could not sit down.

The marks on the young boy were discovered by his mother, and reported to police when the child was taken to the Waccamaw Emergency Room.

The boy said he was awoken around 6 a.m. on Feb. 10 when 31-year-old Patrick Mayfield got home from work. According to the Horry County Police report, Mayfield told the boy to get a switch because, "[The child] upset his wife and needs to be punished for it."

The child admitted to police that asked the woman to use the phone to call his mother the day before, but she would not allow it, and he started to cry.

Police observed red marks and welts on the boys rear end and arms.

Mayfield was booked into J. Reuben Long Detention Center on Feb. 19 and charged with cruelty to children.
