BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A custodian at West Brunswick High School was arrested Monday in connection to several sexually related charges with a student.

Valentine Rivera, 42, has been charged with sexual activity with a student by school personnel, sexual battery, and felony disseminating pornographic materials.

According to the arrest warrants, Rivera is accused of showing the victim a nude photo of himself and forced the victim to touch him in an inappropriate way.

School officials said Rivera was a daytime custodial services staff at West Brunswick High, and that he was immediately placed on administrative leave.

Jessica Swencki, a spokesperson for Brunswick County Schools said they want to send a message to parents and the community -- that this type of alleged behavior is not tolerated in schools.

"We feel it's most important to tell our parents and our community that the shock and dismay that they feel when they learn about allegations related to sexual misconduct is the same feeling of shock and dismay that members of the educational organization feel as well," said Swencki. "Safety of our students is our number one priority."

School officials released this statement regarding the situation, "It is most important for our community to know that WBHS officials and the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office responded swiftly after receiving information about these serious allegations. The alleged behavior is not tolerated at our school or any school in Brunswick County."

According to the school records, Rivera was hired in November 2010 as a substitute custodian and became full time in January 2013.

Rivera will remain on leave pending the outcome of the investigation. His next court appearance is a probable cause hearing, scheduled for March 11.
