GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Hot meals and showers are available for families still struggling without power in Georgetown County.
Within 24 hours since the multi-agency effort launched, almost 1,000 meals were served. That number represents only a fraction of families still without electricity.
"Santee Electric is in the more rural areas of our county. With trees surrounding the power lines, there is more work cut out for them," explained Jackie Broach, the spokesperson for Georgetown County.
At the county's last count, more than 5,000 were still without power in their homes.
It quickly became apparent that assistance was needed. Georgetown County Emergency Management teamed up with SC Baptist Disaster Relief, the Salvation Army, and Georgetown County Government to prepare and distribute food.
Starting Monday, meals will be available daily at 8 am, noon, and 6 pm at the following locations:
- Ringel Heights Baptist Church located at 78 Rubin Ave
- Northwest Regional Recreation Center located at 8189 Choppee Road
- Sampit Park located at 495 Powell Road
The SC Baptist Disaster Relief group will also have mobile shower units available at the church for anyone needing a hot shower. Towels are provided, but people should bring their own toiletries.
In addition, the mobile unit is equipped with a washer and dryer and is free to use for those affected by the massive power outage.
