DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A female Darlington County Sheriff's deputy that was on leave is now facing charges for fighting after an investigation by the Florence County Sheriff's Office.

FCSO Investigations allege that 30-year-old Kristan Jeffords, of Lamar, was off-duty when she got into an altercation with a person on Hutchinson Road in Darlington County.

The victim in the case had to get medical treatment. Jeffords is now charged with assault and battery, third degree.

An off-duty supervisor was also suspended after the altercation; Sheriff Wayne Byrd says the supervisor is suspended because they should have acted faster to diffuse the situation.

Deputy Jeffords was also involved in a crash in Florence County on Sunday, January 12. She was responding to act as backup for another deputy at a domestic incident in Darlington Sunday when the crash occurred, confirmed Cpl. Sonny Collins with the South Carolina Highway Patrol. As she passed a car, it made a left turn and collided with her vehicle.

Deputy Jeffords did not have any significant injuries from the accident, Cpt. Collins said. The other car was determined to be at fault. Deputy Jeffords did have her lights and sirens on at the time.
