Large warehouse fire breaks out at Savannah port

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - A large fire burning inside a warehouse at the Port of Savannah is sending up a cloud of thick, black smoke that can be seen from miles away.

Georgia Ports Authority spokesman Robert Morris said all port workers were safe and accounted for after the fire broke out Saturday at the port's Ocean Terminal near downtown Savannah. Firefighters were working to contain and extinguish the blaze.

Morris says the fire is burning rubber stored inside the warehouse, causing a giant column of black smoke. He says he does not know what started it.

Savannah-Chatham County police spokesman Julian Miller says the fire and smoke have stopped some traffic west of downtown Savannah and slowed travel on the Talmadge Bridge spanning the Savannah River.
