FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - Students at Francis Marion University were evacuated from a dorm building Wednesday night for a fire scare that turned out to be a false alarm.

Windy Hill Fire and the City of Florence Fire Department responded to the fire and after 45 minutes allowed students back inside.

Smoke was visible when crews arrived, but crews determined there was no threat to the building, said FMU spokesman Tucker Mitchell. At this time, there is no evidence of there ever being a fire.

The Windy Hill Fire Department and FMU Police are investigating the cause of smoke coming from one of the dorms, and there is a possibility the investigation will lead to charges, Mitchell said.
