Police officer on leave after fatal Kingstree shooting

Posted: Updated:

KINGSTREE, SC (WMBF) - A South Carolina police officer has been placed on administrative leave following a fatal shooting in Kingstree.

Kingstree Police Chief Eric Williams says that shooting occurred around 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31 when a Kingstree Police office responded to reports that a man - identified as 31-year-old Alton Reaves - was waving a gun around near Main Street and Railroad Avenue.

Reaves reportedly pointed his gun at the police officer that responded to the scene, and the officer shot him.

Reaves died at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston Friday night, confirmed Coroner Harrison McKnight. Autopsy results are still pending.

Chief Williams says his department understands this is a traumatic experience, and counseling services are being made available to all involved, including the officer. The name of that officer has not been released, but they have been placed on administrative leave as the State Law Enforcement Division investigates.
