Hundreds gather to say goodbye to Brandon Robinson

Laughs, tears and love filled the Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School gym as hundreds gathered to remember the life of SC State student-athlete Brandon Robinson Saturday.

The 20-year-old industrial engineering technology junior from Orangeburg, who played football as an outside linebacker and defensive end for SC State, was shot and killed Jan. 24 outside a student dorm on campus. Five arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.

Brandon had a profound impact on those he knew, on and off the football field, his friends said.

His high school football coach Tommy Brown said Brandon loved life and it showed.

"We had the pleasure of having a young man that was excited about playing, that was excited about life everyday and we had a relationship that was something; that even though it's a time of grieving I can remember him joyously because he always had a smile on his face and he always enjoyed what he did," Brown said.

Brown recalled when it was time for Brandon to make a decision on where to go college, saying Brandon wanted to stay close to home.

"The thing we had in common is that he loved his mother so dearly," Brown said. "I was trying to get him off to school somewhere and one of the things he said ‘Coach, I can't leave my mother, I got to stay close to my mother.'"

Brandon not only excelled on the field but in the classroom, graduating high school with a 3.7 GPA.

"We can all look back and say we got the opportunity to be a part of his life," Pastor Michael C. Butler said.

Teachers remembered him as fun-loving, determined, focused to achieve and compassionate, Butler said.

"Brandon attempted to see the brighter side of life," Butler said. "He had a smile that was infectious even on a not so great day he would smile. That's who Brandon Robinson was. It might be a tragedy the way God took him. He had an autobiography that was full; most people his age do not have those types of accomplishments. Not only was he an athlete, he was a bright student."

Brandon, we want to say goodnight, Butler said.
