Myrtle Beach listed third most popular summer destination

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Myrtle Beach is listed at one of the top three most popular summer vacation destinations for 2014 according to FlipKey a vacation rental website.

FlipKey, which is owned by TripAdvisor, reports that 500,000 reservation requests have already been made on properties for summer 2014. The top three requested locations for June, July and August are: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Ocean City, Md.; and Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Millions of travelers visiting the website every month, means more exposure for local properties, which means a boom for local business and the Grand Strand as a whole.

Surfside Realty has over 500 properties that circulate through the website and says this helps drive up sales.

"Our sales are up, our sales are very good this year, Myrtle Beach is definitely the place to be," says Kate McKenzie of Surfside Realty. "Any website we can use that's beneficial to our customers, we will use." She says the company gets plenty of reservations each day through the web.

CCU Center for Resort Tourism says the six week period from the end of December through January, supports growth from the previous year. The boost in our slowest season has many hopeful there are more visitors to come.

"We're not even finished with January yet, so to see this type of ranking is great news for our upcoming summer season in the Myrtle Beach area," said Brad Dean, president and CEO of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. "Air carriers are setting earlier spring start dates with service to the Grand Strand, and now vacation rental property requests are growing for our busiest season.
