GREER, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Greer police said a man wanted after he shot at officers during a car chase was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals Saturday afternoon.

Lt. Eric Pressley with the Greer Police Department said officers identified the suspect as Denis Kearney.

According to Lt. Tim Ridgeway with the Greenville County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to assist Greer Police after the driver of a Dodge Durango sped off after a traffic stop and led police officers on a chase just after midnight, Saturday.

Ridgeway said, at some point before deputies joined the chase on Highway 14, the suspects in the Durango fired a gun at Greer officers. Luckily, Ridgeway said, no one was hurt in the shooting.

Deputies set up and prepared to disable the vehicle, Ridgeway said, and were able to successfully shoot out one of the suspect's tires.

The suspect's vehicle pulled to a stop in a yard near East Kings Road, and Ridgeway said the suspect ran from the Durango.

Helicopters, SWAT teams and K9 search teams responded to the area, but deputies said they were unable to locate the suspect.

Deputies said they were able to locate the gun inside the suspect's vehicle.

Deputies said they notified people living in the area to be on the lookout through the county's Red Alert system, in which deputies call surrounding homes and advise residents of the situation.

Deputies returned to the area after sunrise on Saturday and resumed the search for Kearney.

Around 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Pressley sent out an e-mail stating that members of U.S. Marshals' Fugitive Task Force had taken Kearney into custody. No other details were available.

Kearney is charged with attempted murder, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of a weapon by a felon, failure to stop for police, and discharging a weapon at an occupied vehicle, according to Pressley.
