CHERAW, SC (WMBF) - Police in Marlboro County have captured the dog that pinned a small child down and bit the woman trying to save her.
Captain Keith Thomas with the Cheraw Police Department told WMBF News that the eight-year-old girl was walking near Church and Chestnut streets Monday afternoon when the grey, mixed-breed dog knocked her down into a ditch.
The dog was on top of the child when a woman walked by and heard screaming. She attempted to beat the dog off of the child with a stick, and the dog bit her on the leg.
Both the woman and child were taken to the hospital for injuries, and released hours later. The girl did not have any bite marks but had multiple scratches on her chest, arms and thighs.
Witnesses tried to hold the dog on the scene until police arrived, but the canine got away. He was captured Tuesday morning and placed in quarantine at the Chesterfield Animal Shelter.
The Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) will try and verify if the dog has up-to-date vaccinations.
Captain Thomas said it appears the dog broke free from his collar, which was attached to a chain connected to a stake in the ground.
