Longtime South Carolina Legislator Liston Barfield is retiring and locals are already looking to fill his shoes in Columbia.

Barfield confirmed Monday that he would not be seeking another term representing S.C. House of Representatives for District 58, which encompasses parts of Conway and Aynor.

He said he has not sent out an official letter stating his retirement, but planned to do so in the next week or two.

Barfield has been serving the people of Conway and Aynor for more than 20 years.

He was first elected to the S.C. House in 1986.

Even with the official public notification pending, locals are already looking to fill the seat.

Horry County Republican Party Chairman Robert Rabon said he is interested in the job.

"I have been thinking about it and praying about it, but I haven't made an official decision yet," he said.

Rabon said through his years he has worked hard to be involved in the county and support the people of Horry County.

"I do things to make Horry County a better place," he said.

Filing for elections starts March 16.

Rabon said according to the GOP bylaws, if no one files against him in the Republican primary, he can continue to serve as chairman for the party.

"If someone files against me, I would have to resign," he said.
