CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

Melissa Maddox-Evans is on the general council for the Housing Authority for the City of Charleston.

She said her appreciation for Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Junior runs deep, because she feels, if not for him, she would not have the same opportunities, both because of her race and gender.

"Well, on behalf of MLK Day, I'd like to first of all say I'm very proud of all the accomplishments of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King and leaders like him," said Maddox-Evans. "I believe that you can never stress enough the importance of the civil rights movements and other leaders and their accomplishments. I believe that the story can never be told enough. It can always be told more."

"When this agency was created almost 80 years ago, it would have been unheard of for an African American female to be its general council. But, here I am today," said Maddox-Evans. "And, I believe that it is because of the sacrifices and leaders like Dr. King that I am able to be in this type of position. But also, help others to accomplish their dreams as well. So I'm thankful and very hopeful as well for the future."
