Deputy in Darlington Co. accused of assault

DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Darlington County officials are investigating accusations of an assault by an off-duty deputy.

In a press release, the sheriff's office stated, "Officials say the accusations came to them Friday night from a female subject stating she had been assaulted by an off-duty female deputy. The altercation started after subject was asked to leave a location on Hutchinson Drive in Hartsville. An off-duty supervisor was also present."

"After being informed of the situation Friday night, I immediately called the Florence County Sheriff's Office and asked them to dispatch deputies to the scene, " said Sheriff Byrd.

"I have suspended the supervisor, who should have acted faster to defuse the situation, and I have suspended the deputy who was involved in the altercation," stated Sheriff Byrd. "I have also asked that all the statements and any evidence be turned over the 4th Circuit Solicitor and that he and his investigators alone determine what happened and who is at fault."

Sheriff Wayne Byrd goes on to say that he will abide by the findings of his investigation and that he will not hesitate to take further disciplinary action, should it be merited. Stay tuned to WMBF News for the latest updates.
