Meeting planned to discuss Conway crime

CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - The Horry County Solicitor's Office confirms that a string of shootings in the Conway area are linked to drugs and gang activity.

Solicitor Jimmy Richardson said the violent trend includes a homicide in January and handful of shootings around New Years 2013.

Next week, the US Attorneys Office, Solicitor Richardson, and Conway Police are hosting a community crime watch meeting to talk about cracking down on crime in the neighborhood at the juncture of Highway 378 and Highway 701.

The meeting is on Thursday, Jan. 23 at 6:30 p.m. at Whittemore Park Middle School and the public is invited to attend.

Richardson said the meeting is another step in Conway's partnership with US Attorney Bill Nettles to try and curb the violence.

Long time Conway resident and Excecutive Director of A Father's House Wallace Evans Jr. said he has seen wave after wave o violence hit the community for 13 years.

"I'm mean its horrible and these are problems plaguing our community that have happened for quite some time and we needs solutions," added Evans Jr.

Another resident, Demitta Adgerson, said it is unsettling to hear about all of these violent crimes happening but added that police have stepped up their presence in this area of town.

"Now we have crime watchers out here and a lot of times when stuff happens police have responded very quickly to situations and we've seen more police lately patrolling the area," said Adgerson.
