HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A woman is facing charges for leaving three children - one bound to a wheelchair - at home alone, according to an Horry County Police report.
Police officers were called to the home on Highway 701 in Conway on Jan. 9 to find three kids at home without supervision. One of the children is wheelchair-bound, unable to control his arms and legs, with a feeding tube in his stomach.
The oldest child claimed they ate fast food after getting home from school, but another child said they had not eaten since 29-year-old Kristen Mari Mason left them at home.
Officers discovered the kids had no way of reaching Ms. Mason because they did not know her number and their cell phone did not have minutes. Mason's boyfriend was at work and did not have a phone.
Mason contacted a friend to come and sit with her kids until she arrived, claiming she was in Socastee and did not have a way home. Reportedly, Mason was high and "has a narcotics problem," the police report stated. When she called back to the police officer, "she was not making any sense while talking and slurring her speech."
Mason's boyfriend of eight years got home from work and told police he did not father the three kids, but he supports them. The Department of Social Services allowed police to release custody of the kids to the boyfriend.
Kristen Mason was arrested and charged with three counts of unlawful neglect of a child. She was released from J. Reuben Long Detention Center with a $2,500 bond.
