Horry County to hire new airport director

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A six figure job is up for grabs as the county searches for a new Director of Airports. With that price tag is a list of responsibilities.

The salary range for the new director is between $130,000 to $145,000 and will require the candidate to overlook four airports including MYR, two General Aviation operations in North Myrtle Beach and Conway, and one unmanned, lighted airstrip in Loris.

The requirements for the position include a broad background in airport finance, operations, and development. Now that the new terminal is completed, Horry County wants to continue moving MYR forward and make the county a competitor in the airline market.

"We want to keep the air carriers that we have, expand the market, expand the destinations, so air service development is huge," explained Lisa Bourcier, the spokeswoman for Horry County.

So, the new director will work hand-in-hand with MBREDC and the Chamber of Commerce to keep tourists flying to the Grand Strand and to offer more options for locals when traveling out of town.

In addition to expanding flights, the director will also expand job opportunities at the ITAP Industrial Park across the runway.

"We hope to get momentum going to get that airport park up and running, that will be a big task for that individual as well," said Bourcier.

The job posting closed at 5 p.m. Friday. Now the HR Department will sort out the applicants with the minimum requirements. From there, the County Administrator will interview candidates over the next few weeks.

Once the top three are selected, the county will release their names and resumes.

Summer hasn't even technically started, yet the summer-like heat and humidity will continue to reach uncomfortable levels the next few days. We start off this morning with mugginess in the air. High temperatures reach near 87 along the Grand Strand but easily make it into the low 90s inland. The heat index will feel like 95 to 100 along the coast, but more like 102 to 105 inland.
