SCOTLAND COUNTY, NC (WMBF) - A "violent altercation" during the booking of an inmate in the Scotland County Jail injured several sheriff's deputies and sent one to the hospital.

The Scotland County Sheriff's Office posted on their Facebook page that Sheriff's Deputy Lee Davis was taken to Scotland Memorial Hospital by ambulance and later airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte with severe injuries to his left eye.

Scotland County Sheriff Shep Jones said Davis was discharged on Tuesday, but said his injuries did require surgery.

"We, The Sheriff and Members of The Scotland County Sheriff's Office requests the prayers of our community for Sheriff's Deputy Lee Davis," he said.

The sheriff's office has not said what additional charges the inmate involved in this altercation could face.
