HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - As a community searches for a missing woman, thousands of others worry about going anywhere alone late at night. To ease the worry, Fitness Edge locations are hosting free self-defense seminars for women this week.
Tuesday at 7:15 p.m., the Fitness Edge location in Carolina Forest will open its doors to women hoping to learn how to protect themselves. They say their goal is to raise awareness and help educate people about the different types of defenders.
They hope to demonstrate to women how to escape any potential threat they might face. The instructor is a Tae Kwon Do black belt with 13 years of law enforcement experience.
The seminar Tuesday is the first of two. There will be another seminar on Saturday at 11:45 a.m. at Fitness Edge in Murrells Inlet.
Adam Crawford is a manager at the location in Carolina Forest; he says you never know when you're going to be put in a violent situation, but they hope to prepare you in every way if that happens.
"It's not only physical, it's also mental - just having that knowledge and state of mind that you would be able to protect yourself in any type of circumstance that would arise," Crawford says.
The classes are open to girls and women over the age of 14.
"Everybody needs to be able to defend themselves, especially in this crazy world we live in today, you know, with the increased crime," Crawford continues. "Especially in Myrtle Beach, and all around the world, everybody should be able to defend themselves from any type of predator."
