City of Florence holds public meetings regarding redistricting

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - The City of Florence will host public information meetings regarding redistricting in our three City Council districts during the month of January.

Redistricting is the process of drawing United Sates electoral district boundaries, often in response to population changes determined by the results of the decennial census. The City of Florence will strive to fulfill all of the goals of the Voting Rights Act and the interpretations of that Act that have been handed down through the years. Those principles include the following:

• Adhere to the court ordered constitutional requirement of one person, one vote by keeping the population deviation between the districts at less than 10 percent

• Adherence to the 1965 Voting Rights Act, as amended, and by controlling court decisions

• Ensure that parts of the districts are contiguous

• Respect communities of interest

• Attempt to maintain constituent consistency

• Avoid splitting voting precincts

• Solicit public input

Meetings are scheduled by district as follows:

District #1 (Councilwoman Teresa Myers Ervin)

January 13, 2013 3:30 – 6:30pm Majority Baptist Church - 414 N. Coit Street

District #2 (Councilman Ed Robinson)

January 9, 2013 3:30 – 6:30pm Mt. Zion AME Church - 1305 E. Cheves Street

District #3 (Councilman Buddy Brand)
