Couple visiting grave site returns to find home burned on Christmas Eve

Posted: Updated:

DARLINGTON, SC (WMBF) - A man visiting his mothers grave site with his girlfriend on Christmas Eve returned to his home to find it had caught fire.

City of Darlington Fire Chief Pat Cavanaugh said around 4 p.m. Tuesday, firefighters arrived to the home on Ervin street, where they found 20 percent of the home engulfed in flames.

Chief Cavanaugh said the fire started in the back room of the home. The fire department is not sure how the fire started.

It is not believed the home is a total loss but it is not livable in its current condition. The Red Cross is putting the victim and his girlfriend, who both live in the home, in a motel in Florence for three nights.

The homeowner and his girlfriend were out putting flowers on his mother's grave in Lynches River in Florence County during the fire.

They planned to take gifts to his girlfriends' grandchildren on Christmas,  but the gifts that were saved by firefighters smell of smoke.
