FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) – A large mobile home fire blocked part of East Marion Highway for several hours Friday afternoon and evening, according to officials.

Windy Hill Fire crews arrived at an area near East Old Marion Highway and North Firetower Road to find a mobile home 50 percent engulfed in flames, said Fire Chief John Delung. The fire was working from the back of the home and moving forward.

"I looked up to go back to the house to get my take and I saw a spark on the back porch. And another spark and it went boom! And that was the fire - it made a big fire," said neighbor Sheryl Hatchell.

The structure, which is described as three mobile homes smashed together under two roofs, has been unoccupied since 2007, officials said.

Windy Hill was assisted by fire crews from the City of Florence and Howe Springs. East Marion Highway was closed for several hours at the intersection of Firetower Road while crews worked to contain and extinguish the fire.
