HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - South Carolina has just been ranked as being home to the second worst drivers in the nation. The survey is based on things like DUIs, tickets and accidents. But could part of the problem be the condition of the roads?
The Grand Strand area's Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) has identified the top intersections where we see the most problems. There's a formula to get on the list: the intersections are studied for the number of accidents, the amount of congestion and delays.
Topping the list is the Inlet Square Drive and Tournament Boulevard intersection, and where 17 Bypass meets Glenns Bay Road. Singleton Ridge Road in Conway has been the scene of more than 50 accidents in one year, but there are major intersections listed like Highway 501 and Highway 378 in Conway and Highway 501 and Kings Highway in Myrtle Beach.
Drivers say changes are needed.
"Definitely," said local driver Bonnie Dozler. "Even I have had problems. I can't see. I can't pull out. Or people don't understand. When you have a pull out lane, it means you pull out. You just don't sit there so there's frustration."
For most of the intersections, the solution is to add turn lanes or install traffic lights. Those intersection improvement projects are scheduled to happen through the year 2019.
