COLUMBIA, SC (WMBF) - South Carolina's Mega Millions drawing will be held Tuesday night at 11 p.m., with an estimated $586 million jackpot with a $316 million cash payout. Tickets must be purchased by 10 p.m. Tuesday.
The advertised jackpot was adjusted up by lottery officials from $550 million Monday afternoon. The record jackpot for Mega Millions was $656 million, set in March of last year.
Mega Millions officials reported strong weekend sales, which could mean an even more higher jackpot. Friday night's drawing generated about 154,000 winners with payouts from anywhere between $1 and $10,000.
The odds of winning the jackpot in Tuesday's drawing are about 1 in 259 million.
The purpose of the lottery is to promote educational funding for the State of South Carolina, and a big jackpot like this one, could mean an increase of $2 to $5 million in funds for South Carolina schools.
