18-wheeler accident snares traffic on Hwy. 544 at Hwy. 31

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF)- An 18-wheeler truck jack-knifed on Highway 544 near Highway 31, and lanes heading towards Conway were shut down Thursday afternoon.

The accident is in the Conway-bound side of Highway 544. On Thursday afternoon, Hwy. 544 was reduced to one open Myrtle Beach-bound lane, and anyone heading towards Conway was being diverted onto Highway 31.

According to Cpl. Sonny Collins with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, a pick-up truck got off Highway 31 to get on 544 westbound, toward Conway, and merged into the side of an 18-wheeler headed the in the same direction.

The pick-up truck driver was taken to a nearby hospital, and the driver of the 18-wheeler was uninjured.

The front of the truck was compressed, and there was damage to the entire vehicle. The jack-knifed 18-wheeler was nearly tipped over with its rear right wheels lifted off the ground.

According to information from the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the accident happened at about 12:30 p.m . Thursday.

The accident remains under investigation by the SCHP.
