Family's Christmas presents stolen from hiding place in trunk

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A local family is scrambling to find a way to save Christmas after the gifts that were supposed to go under their tree were stolen.

The trunk was filled with Christmas gifts that Shawn Mclean bought for his three children, but within days, they were gone.

Shawn and his wife kept the gifts for their kids in the car, because they had no space to hide them in their home.

When Shawn went to his car last Wednesday morning, he realized he had left it unlocked.

Spare change and DVDs were missing from the car, which was parked right in his driveway, but his wife's checkbook was left behind.

It wasn't until days later that he realized he was missing so much more: the Christmas gifts the couple had bought for their kids.

Mclean estimates that he lost "a couple of hundred dollars at least."

"I mean there was clothes, video games, movies, board games, toys, books, I mean just a little bit of everything," he says. "Money's always tight, and it's just crushing to lose that amount of gifts this close to Christmas."

Now Mclean and his wife are scrambling to figure out how they're going to get gifts for their three kids to open on Christmas morning.

The family has lived in their Horry County home for three years and never felt unsafe, until now.

"We never thought it would happen to us, and we thought we were doing the smart thing trying to protect our, hide our presents in the trunk so the kids wouldn't find them and ruin Christmas," Mclean says,  "And somebody stole all the presents and ruined Christmas."

Mclean hopes people will learn from his mistake and never leave their cars unlocked, even when parked in the driveway.

He says he will remind his kids, the spirit of Christmas is about giving and not receiving.

Mclean says he has not yet told his kids about what happened. He just wants whoever took their gifts to return them, so his family can have a Merry Christmas.

Horry County police say there were no witnesses in the case, but are asking anyone with information in the case to give them a call.
