Red Cross Heroes Campaign to raise 29k for Red Cross

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A painting of the Myrtle Beach strand is expected to raise $29,000 for the local American Red Cross Coastal Chapter.

Freddie Hyatt, owner of Hyatt Buick GMC in Myrtle Beach is on the Red Cross Hero Committee, which kicked off its annual Heroes Campaign on December 1.

To kick off fundraising for the campaign, Hyatt Commissioned nationally known artist Vic Gillespie from Little River, who sits with him on the Hero Committee. The two brainstormed and eventually Gillespie painted a scene that captures the famous Myrtle Beach SkyWheel and embodies sweet summertime.

Proceeds from the fundraiser go straight to the local Red Cross Coastal Chapter, which serves Horry, Georgetown and Williamsburg Counties.

"It's very important to me that the money stays here to support our neighbors because it is neighbors helping neighbors," Hyatt said.

For sale are 240 26-by-13 inch prints of Gillespie's artwork. These cost $100. For $500, there are 10 "remarques" prints for sale to which Gillespie will add something personal to the scene, making it a one-of-a-kind work of art.

Last year, the chapter used funds raised to:

  •  Provide housing and help for 749 local people who lost their homes to fire
  • Emergency messages to 481 local members of the armed forces and their families
  • Assist local military families and military retirees through outreach services
  • Educate 15,160 community members in how to prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters
  • Purchase Christmas gifts to 42 children who were victims of fire damage during the year
