Passenger killed in crash on Hwy. 17 at Holmestown Rd.

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – One person has died as a result of the crash on Highway 17 Bypass in Surfside.

The southbound lanes of the highway were blocked at Holmestown Road around lunchtime Tuesday after South Carolina Highway Patrol reported the crash, which occurred around 12:07 p.m.

According to Highway Patrol, a Dodge pickup truck was attempting to make a left turn onto Holmestown Road and failed to yield. It struck a Chevrolet pickup that was traveling south on Highway 17.

The passenger in the Chevrolet was killed. A total of three people were transported to the hospital and everyone involved in the crash were wearing seatbelts.

The driver of the Dodge, Brian Hamilton, is charged with failure to yield right-of-way. The crash remains under investigation.

A WMBF News photographer in the area was able to capture images of the traffic backup in the area. By about 1:40 p.m., South Carolina Department of Transportation traffic cameras showed traffic moving normally through the intersection.
