MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Many people have heard of the "ball drop", but soon Myrtle Beach could join in on the Big Apple's New Year's Eve fun. Tuesday morning, Myrtle Beach City Council will review Market Common's application to have a big outdoor New Year's Eve event.
The event is called a "Southern Times Square", and Market Common wants to shut down the major streets in the area to make it happen. Because they are waiting on final approval, details of the event are not yet being released. Some of the plans call for a live band, restaurant tents, a golf cart parade and a live showing of the ball drop in New York City.
People who visit Myrtle Beach say they hope the city approves, because it's an event that would certainly have them come back.
"It sounds like a wonderful idea," said Glenda Brady. "Not all of us can make it to New York for the big ball drop, but it would be awesome to have one close by so that we can all come and watch the ball drop together. I think it'd be awesome."
The Market Common has plans to make the event an annual one, and businesses in the area certainly want it to happen. WMBF News talked with a general manager of one of the local businesses, and he says The Market Common is missing out on two big events that bring in the big bucks: Halloween and New Years Eve.
"It's a market that's pretty much untapped for The Market Common," explained William Morris, Gordon Biersch General Manager. "A lot of people take their business to Broadway which is an established event, and if we had something that was annual and it worked, it would be great."
Market Common representatives asked that details on the event be withheld until official approval comes down from city council.
