MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Myrtle Beach head coach Mickey Wilson addressed hundreds of cheering fans on Monday at Myrtle Beach High School to celebrate a state championship. And it all was made possible thanks to a last minute drive where everything came together.
"We had two big third down conversions on that last drive," he said. "Great poise from our sophomore quarterback Drayton Arnold."
Arnold was able to connect with Kelton Greene on third and long to get the Seahawks to midfield with just more than a minute left. Then with less than a minute to play, Graham Vaughn added on to his two touchdown performance by moving the chains once more.
"I had butterflies in my stomach, I just had to hold my breath," said sophomore running back Brandon Sinclair.
Inside the ten yard line, the Seahawks let the game tick down to the last possible second. And then it was Sean Huggins' turn to be the hero - and confidence wasn't an issue.
"I thought 'It's just another day of practice'," he said. "An easy kick. Just had to keep my head down and follow through and that was it."
Huggins sent the Seahawks to a title - a fate that coach Wilson knew of since the night before.
"All the coaches did bed checks to make sure everyone was in bed (on Friday night), and right before I left his room I told him, 'you're going to kick a field goal to win the state championship tomorrow.'"
"It was a big time drive and a big time field goal, and it's great to be a state champion."
