CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Police in Charlotte have arrested a man they say fatally shot a relative of the Columbia, SC Mayor Steve Benjamin.

Donald Everett Gist, 38, was fatally shot Friday just after 1 p.m. on the 2100 block of Beatties Ford Road. He pronounced dead on scene by paramedics.

Gist is the brother-in-law of Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin.

Benjamin confirmed Gist's death on Friday.

Arthur L. Givens is charged with murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, assault with a deadly weapon and communicating threats, according to a news release from police. He was arrested at a home on Echodale Drive Tuesday morning.

Givens has an extensive violent arrest history that includes convictions for assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, use of a firearm during drug trafficking, weapon offenses, felony drug offenses and probation violations.

The Gist and Benjamin families issued a statement on the news that Givens was arrested. It read:

"We would like to thank Mayor Cannon, Chief Monroe and the men and women of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department for their swift action in identifying and apprehending this dangerous criminal so that he can answer for the life he has taken and the pain he has caused our family. We have a long way to go yet, but this is an important step in the right direction not only in helping ease our grief but in making sure that this individual can never hurt another family the way he has ours.

"We would also like to thank the people of Charlotte and Columbia and all those who have offered their prayers and support throughout this ordeal. Your kindness has been a source of strength for us all and we are eternally grateful."
