Before you get lost in Cyber Monday space, check your computer

Posted: Updated:

WILMINGTON,NC (WECT)- Capping off the post- Thanksgiving shopping weekend of course is Cyber Monday. One thing you'll want to remember before you blow up the cyber world with your credit card is safety.

Computer repair specialists say they see a jump in business after Cyber Monday because all the online shoppers who weren't armed with computer safety knowledge need repairs.

This might be a familiar scenario you've experience with your computer before:

  • poor performance

  • failure to boot properly

  • unwanted pop-ups

  • website redirects

  • a slow running computer

  • loss of data

These are tell tale signs your computer has been infected with a virus.

However, you can keep yourself out of trouble while clicking away on Cyber Monday if you are proactive and computer educated .

Will Cutrell with the Wilmington Computer Company tells said computer users aren't aware of the basic tools available, sometimes free, that would help them in being proactive against virus, malware, and spyware attacks.

He added you should always remember the three basic tools to protect you from cyber attacks:

  1. current virus protection
  2. malware protection
  3. spyware protection

Using these separate tools seems to work better than "an all in one package".

Here are some tips to take with you:

  • Remember, you can replace a computer but you can't replace data-- like important photos, videos or music.

  • Be proactive and have the right tools in place first! For example, Microsoft security essentials for virus protection, Spybot spyware protection, and Malwarebytes Pro for malware protection.
