Funeral services announced for Kershaw SRO

KERSHAW COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

Funeral services have been announced for a Kershaw County school resource officer who passed away this week after having a heart attack while directing traffic at Wateree Elementary School.

The officer's family has identified him as 50-year-old Rob Evans. The family says Evans has been in law enforcement for over 20 years now and he loves working with children.

Lugoff Fire Chief Dennis Ray was sitting in line at the school when he says witnesses called him back over to help the officer who was unconscious and lying in the road.

"I was about 10 cars deep, so I had no idea anything was going on," said Ray.

Chief Ray says when he got to Evans, two nurses had already started CPR. Ray radioed for help, and the CPR continued.

Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews says the firefighters kept his deputy alive, using an AED and CPR until an ambulance got Evans to KershawHealth. From there, doctors stabilized Evans long enough to transport him to Providence Hospital. Evans died Wednesday morning.

Ray says Deputy Evans is a big part of the Lugoff community as a football game announcer.

His passion was being the voice of the Demons, and loved the phrase "It's another Demon... FIRST DOWN, Let's Move Those Chains" and he was an assistant coach for the basketball team and football team at Lugoff-Elgin Middle School.

Funeral services will be held Dec. 1 at 1:30 p.m. Lugoff First Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lugoff-Elgin High School ABLE Club.
