DHEC drops in on several Grand Strand restaurants

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Whether you're in the mood for something sweet, or a home-style meal, we've got you covered in this week's restaurant scorecard. The Department of Health and Environmental Control dropped in on Crepe Creation, Webster's Low Country Grill and Hong Kong, and dished out different reviews for each establishment.

Terri Wilson is a regular at Hong Kong Restaurant. This week, DHEC inspectors stopped by to check it out. Their report shows the business was cited for holding its meat at improper temperatures, a critical violation.

"I think it's the best restaurant," Wilson said. "Now, as far as the kitchen, I really don't know, but when I go in there, it's decent, it's clean to me. Everything is in place."

The Little River location was also cited for seven other minor violations. Hong Kong scored an 85, a "B" rating.

Crepe Creation may be in a new location, but that doesn't stop owner Larry Cauble from making sure the Market Common spot keeps an "A" rating on its door. In fact, DHEC cited the restaurant for only two minor violations, including improper utensil storage, but it scored a 97.

The owner says it takes a lot of work to keep Crepe Creation in shape. "Keeping my staff focused on taking care of the customers, making great crepes, but also cleaning, cleaning, cleaning," said Cauble. "Restaurants to me are never clean, I mean you really have to keep on it, there's always something you can do."

At Webster's Low Country Grill, DHEC found a few violations that needed fixed: two critical violations, including flies in the bar drain and sink. The Litchfield Beach spot was also cited for nine major violations, including dirt and trash on the floor. DHEC will do a follow-up inspection soon.

Right now, Webster's Low Country Grill has a score of 79, a "B"rating.

A restaurant featured last week received a follow-up visit from DHEC. Key West Crazy in Little River got another visit after receiving a "B" rating last week. This week, Key West Crazy bumped back up to a 99, an "A" rating.

701 Seafood Market and Grill also improved its score to a 98, which is also an "A" rating.
