Lamar man dies from burns after debris fire

DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – An elderly Lamar man has died from injuries he sustained when a debris fire he started in his yard got out of control.

Darlington County Firefighters were dispatched to the fire on Newman Swamp Road in Lamar on Thursday, Nov. 19, said Fire Chief Kenny Stratton. While en route, they heard EMS call about a burn victim at the Lamar Police Department.

The man had driven himself to the department, Chief Stratton said. It appears he was burning yard debris when the fire got out of control and burned him. He was alone at the time.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated, and then flown to a burn center in Augusta, Georgia. Coroner Todd Hardee said 89-year-old Cuyler L. Jordan died on Sunday, Dec. 1, one week after being admitted to the hospital for treatment.

Chief Stratton said that while a burn advisory was not in place that Thursday, he urges caution when burning this time of year, as most plant matter is dead now and burns a lot faster, and with the lower humidity, things can catch fire easily.
